Wear Point

The proposed wind farm is named after nearby Wear Point beach, on the northern edge of the Milford Haven waterway in Pembrokeshire, just west of Hazelbeach.

The turbines will be installed on a brownfield or industrial site, owned by oil storage company SemLogistics. They support the project because they believe that combating climate change and diversifying the energy mix in Milford Haven will ultimately lead to more jobs, more high tech intellectual property and more investment moving into the area.

The project consists of four turbines. Each turbine will have a maximum generating capacity of up to 2.5 megawatts (MW). With the blade in upright position, the tip of the blade will reach a height of 105 metres maximum. This is about the same height as the chimneys on the site.

When constructed, the turbines will:

  • serve over 5500 homes with green electricity annually
  • replace the emission of between 7700 and 23000 tonnes of the greenhouse gas CO2 every year, depending on whether the electricity would have been produced by either gas or coal fired power stations

These calculations take the intermittency of wind power into consideration and are considered industry standard. Sources: BWEA and National Statistics
